Message of Thanksgiving from President & CEO, Steve Arms

"In November of 1986, I left the University of Vermont to start MicroStrain, Inc.  So this year, we're celebrating our 25th Thanksgiving as tech innovators.   Thanks to our customers, our hard-working employees, and for the many opportunities we've had to take on challenging projects - we've grown our workforce from just one to 60.  And in addition, we're very proud to support 14 college and HS students with paid internships - providing them with hands-on experience in electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering."  - Steve Arms, President

WSDA-Base Base Stations

New Wireless Base Stations Join MicroStrain's Gateway Offerings

MicroStrain announces additions to our wireless gateway offerings with two new base stations, and upgraded Node Commander software.  The three available base stations are:

  • WSDA-Base-104 USB Base Station: Our current USB base station continues to be a primary base station offering, and has been renamed WSDA-Base 104. It connects to host pc by USB and is included in all wireless sensor node starter kits.  For starter kits with alternate base stations, customers can contact MicroStrain's sales department.
  • New! WSDA-Base-101 Analog Output Base Station: WSDA-Base 101 offers 8 channels of user assignable analog output and is ideal for those who require communication with existing analog data acquisition systems.  WSDA-Base -101 has two buttons on the front panel that can be programmed using Node Commander to perform user selectable functions, including, pair node, initiate sampling, arm & trigger data logging, sleep node and sleep/wake node.
  • New! WSDA-Base-102-RS-232 Serial Output Base Station: WSDA-Base-102 offers a serial RS232 communication interface, accommodating users with serial communication needs common in industrial applications such as connecting to PLC's.

Node Commander software will also be upgraded to fully support the new base stations' features and options, and will be fully compatible with Netbooks.  When purchasing a new WSDA-Base, it will be necessary to have the latest version of Node Commander, Version 2.4 which will be made available when units begin shipping on December 15th, 2011.

MicroStrain Fun Fact: Did You Know...

Earth's Magnetic Field
Image: Gary A. Glatzmaier

Did you know that our newest inertial sensor, the 3DM-GX3-45, contains the 2010 World Magnetic Model, ranging from 1km below sea level to 850 km above sea level? So what does this mean? It means that your tiny 3DM-GX3-45 GPS-Aided Inertial Navigation System can more accurately obtain the device's true north heading, and can detect when the device is nearing areas of strong magnetic interference.   In addition to being used in the filter, all of the information produced by the model (inclination, declination, and the expected field vector) is available to you, the user! The model is updated every 5 years by the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) on behalf of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), therefore, when the new model is established, MicroStrain will update the customers' devices via a firmware upgrade.
